The beauty industry, including nail bars and hairdressing, is subject to the Health and Safety Executive COSHH Regulations (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).

Dermatitis and Asthma are potentially the most common health risks and staff should be protected from exposure to hazardous substances which may have both immediate, and long term effects.

A substance that is hazardous to health can take many forms and include:

  • Chemicals
  • Products containing chemicals
  • Fumes
  • Dusts
  • Vapours
  • Mists
  • Gases
  • Biological agents (germs)

Every year thousands of workers in Britain develop occupational diseases from breathing in certain dusts, fumes or other airborne contaminates at work.

Airborne contaminates can be significant hazards and due to their very small, mostly sub micron sizes, possibly ignored or not considered. The COSHH regulations and recommendations can help identify sources and risks, together with easy practical solutions to control these risks.

Breathing in dusty products, such as persulphates and henna can cause asthma. Some hair sprays can also make asthma worse.

Sweeping floors can generate considerable tiny particles of  dust that could affect people in areas of the salon which are some distance away from the original source.

Chemicals used in the industry may mostly be harmless, however, some may produce immediate or acute health effects such as headaches, eye nose and throat irritation, difficulty in breathing, nausea, dizziness, fatigue and allergic skin reactions.

Long term health risks are allergic respiratory diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis

Filtaire have selected a special enhanced carbon, suitable for the chemicals in use in beauty salons and nail bars to effectively deal with the fumes and odours, known as VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds), released during treatments and activities.

Dust particles are cleared very quickly by the equipment, which provides a complete and total air filtration solution.

The highly efficient design gives 'focused' air treatment - and therefore is effective in minimising the effects of contaminated air using 'Source Control'.

Salons, Colleges, Spas and larger premises should use the ceiling mounted Filtaire 5000 which will provide very clean air continuously throughout the area, whilst for close up focused performance, the small and portable Filtaire 300 and Filtaire 2000 models, can provide very effective filtration and at the lower speed settings, will still allow conversation with clients whilst protecting them also from the dangers of breathing in dangerous particles.

Extraction by way of wall mounted units may be unacceptable because the fumes and odours are 'exported' to other adjacent rooms or buildings.

Extraction is also potentially an expensive option, in terms of  heat or cooling loss and may also create more noise if used at higher rates to be at all effective.

Because Filtaire units continually process the same air many times per hour, there is no heat (or cooling) loss with consequent low energy costs. Filtaire units use a maximum 130 watts of power and therefore are inexpensive to operate.

Filter changes require no specialist skills, and take from just 1 to 5 minutes to perform.

Using Filtaire equipment will greatly improve the air quality in all beauty salons, beauty departments in Colleges, Academy and training establishments, Spa's and Nail Bars.

Providing a clean and safe working environment for the benefit of staff and customers is a fundamental requirement. Filtaire makes this a very simple task.

"The installation of the 2 units you supplied has been a great success and the lecturing staff operating in the salon are delighted with them. The Curriculum Manager would now like to introduce new treatments to another salon and we would therefore request a quotation for the supply of an additional 2 units - Filtaire 5000"   Colin Pentland.

Facilities Manager at Edinburgh's Telford College.
