Protecting Foot Health Professionals.

There are clear dangers to health for all foot health professionals from breathing in hazardous Nail Dust and Chemical Fumes Plus Airborne Bacteria

There are several listed toxic entities that are commonly found in surgeries or wherever treatments are carried out. Specifically, skin/nail dust, ozone/nitrous oxides from bioguns and solvents from sterilant liquids.

Toxic reactions relate more to practitioners than patients because of contact times involved, however extending protection to patients is not only also desirable but 'best practice'.

The removal of keratinous skin or nail reduction generates considerable dust, laden with bacteria and micro fungi. The wearing of face masks is clearly not universal, for example, yet a higher level of respiratory and conjunctival symptoms than normal is suffered by foot health professionals.

An article by Rosemary Purkiss assessed the risks of airborne nail dust. Certainly dust from nails and keratinous dermal tissues (down to micron diameter) represent the main health risk, since they are constantly generated in most surgeries. Such dusts are contaminated with a range of pathogenic bacteria and micro fungi. She also reports that face masks are more effective only for larger dust particles and that without a face mask,99% of dust particles can be inhaled deeply into the lungs.

Solvent vapours, ozone and nitrogen oxides are normally generated in lesser quantities. But, all are significantly toxic.

Health and Safety Executive COSHH regulations should be applied as nail dust, is a recognised hazard and Practitioners should seek to protect themselves from dust inhalation and be aware of antigenic dust hazards. This is a basic requirement and is now legally enforceable.

Please note that a face mask alone is not acceptable for the regulations as a control.

Those that visit their patient’s homes or provide a service to Care Homes, should also use a portable air purifier – apart from the health risk issues, it is sound business sense to clear the dust generated since there may also be vulnerable occupants who live in the same house, such as the old and very young.

Filtaire air purifiers have been developed over many years for use across a wide variety of applications. Independent scientific tests illustrate their effectiveness, to provide clean, pure indoor air – essential in controlling infection and to provide a safe healthy environment.

For the foot health professional there is a choice of two models for use close to patients’ feet. The 300 model  or the more efficient model 2000. Both simply plug into a wall socket and are portable.

For larger premises and training centres, and rooms up to 150 cubic metres, the ceiling mounted model 5000 is highly effective. Noise levels will still allow for normal conversation but the increased ‘boost’ speeds should be used before and after to rapidly clear the room of all contaminates. Surgeries will become much ‘cleaner’ and the carbon filters will deal not only with the various chemicals, but also general odours.

Foot odours may naturally be present  and the compounds involved, such as capryl esters, are adsorbed by the carbon filter elements. This makes the surgery more pleasant for the patient and practitioner alike.

Infections are easily transmitted of course. Basic hygiene disciplines and effective eradication of airborne contaminants are more and more becoming the expected and accepted practice towards a healthy environment where there are risks from procedures.

Filtaire Air Purifiers will also assist in infection control as the activities involve close proximity between practitioner and patient.
