There are 3 ways in which people are exposed to chemicals: Dermal absorption - when chemicals come into contact with skin, or ingestion - when materials are placed in the mouth or eaten. Whilst these are a significant, the vast majority of common exposure occurs through the air we breathe in homes, offices, schools and other indoor environments.

These airborne chemicals are commonly known as volatile organic compounds (VOC’s).

VOC’s are chemicals used to manufacture and maintain building materials, furnishings, personal care products and cleaning products .They are also found in processes such as printing, cooking, hobbies, etc.

’Volatile’ means the ability for these chemicals to evaporate, or easily get into the air at normal room temperatures. There may be hundreds of individual VOC’s in indoor air at any time. Some produce objectionable malodours or are very pungent; however, many have no noticeable odour at all.

VOC’s are found in a number of common products such as furniture, paint, drywall, bedding, paint strippers, adhesives, solvents, upholstery and other textiles, photocopier toners, office supplies, electronic equipment, dry cleaned clothing and a large range of building materials.

A few of the more common VOC’s found in the home, office, workplace and schools etc. are Formaldehyde, Toluene, Xylenes, Methylene, Chloride, Vinyl Chloride, Decane, Butoxyethanol, Perchloroethylene, Isopentane, Styrene, Limonene.

Many VOC’s are known irritants and can cause unpleasant immediate symptoms such as headaches, eye, nose and throat irritation and dizziness. At high concentrations, some VOC’s are toxic and long term exposure may lead to chronic disease or cancer. (Further information may be found in our IAQ section).

Continued industrialisation and developments in new products and processes invariably result in increased levels of contaminates that present new challenges and stricter regulations are being proposed as a consequence.

Filtaire Solutions have researched, selected and developed a specialised range of carbons for their filters, to suit most applications. Activated carbon is the leading technology for the removal of Volatile Organic Compounds from air and other gases.

The standard stock range consists of 8 different types, including different types within the same filter, for certain applications. We choose only the most suitable and best performing in all cases, these may be either granular or pellets and based on bituminous coal, coconut shells, peat and wood.

We have, however, a further 40 plus different and highly specialised contaminate specific products available and our unique method of construction enables us to provide a bespoke service designed for our individual clients needs.

To ensure that the correct carbons are supplied as replacements we colour code the outer casings and maintain full details within our database. The reduction in performance can be gradual with the danger that replacements become overdue and we offer an automatic scheduled replacement service to maintain the consistent high performance levels required. Filtaire carbon filters are interchangeable and so increase the versatility of the range of purifiers.

Standard Carbon Filter Range:

  • CG Type. (Code: Black)

    An extremely high quality premium coal based activated carbon for general air treatment duties which is well suited to the removal of VOC’s including exhaust gases of industrial machinery, paint odours, unpleasant and strong cooking odours and numerous other examples. It is our ‘standard’ fitted type where an overall general performance is required.

  • CF Type. (Code: Blue)

    A pelleted activated carbon for the removal of formaldehyde and associated compounds.

    An excellent and essential product for use in laboratories, hospitals and funeral directors where these compounds are a problem and to assure that working conditions are acceptable. (See our formaldehyde additional resource)

  • CA Type. (Code: Green)

    A specialist high quality impregnated carbon developed for the removal of ammonia and organic ammonia derivatives from the air. Used, for example, in laboratories, chemical processing and other areas such as hospital waste facilities, where ammonia fumes are an issue and to improve working conditions and ensure stringent regulations are adhered to.

  • CN Type (Code: Red)

    A high quality coconut shell based carbon suited to the removal of organic solvents.

    Primary usage is within laboratories, all industries and areas where solvent fumes are an irritant to workers and the beauty industry where the removal of solvents from the air which are associated with chemicals used in the application and removal of acrylic nails and polishes. We recommend this category also for many of the solvent fumes associated with cleaning products.

  • CM Type (Code: Orange)

    The high activity impregnated carbon has been developed for the adsorption of acid gases such as hydrogen sulphide, organic mercaptans , certain organic sulphides, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, VOC’s and ozone.

    This activated carbon is the recommended product for the ‘Guardian Process’ which is used to protect paintings and archives by filtering the air to remove chemicals that can damage them. Uses include art galleries, stately homes, sports trophy rooms, libraries and museums.

  • CP Types (Code: Black & Green)

    Extensive research and testing finally enabled us to establish a single filter that contains more than one type of carbon in a formula designed to deal with the majority of VOC’s found in the photographic and dark room environment, particularly those chemicals released by hydroquinone and phenidone from the developing chemicals which are the main problem compounds. In addition, the unpleasant odours and fumes associated with certain ammonia based chemicals are also dealt with.

  • CS Types (Code Black & Red)

    A high activity coconut based activated carbon for use in general air treatment and an alternative to our ‘standard’ CG type.

    It is used in a range of different applications including industrial filtration, cooking odours, smoking rooms and odour control in public and office buildings especially for the removal of ozone in photocopy rooms.

  • CK Types (Code: Yellow)

    A specially developed impregnated active carbon, designed for the removal and containment of hydrogen sulphide, organic mercaptans and certain other unwanted contaminants from air and natural gas in the presence of oxygen. Typically it has widespread use in sewage treatment odour control, process industries and waste management as well as many general odour applications.
